NYC mayor to announce solar plants at landfills

(AP) -- New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is set to release the first update to his city's 4-year-old environmental plan.

Bloomberg is scheduled to appear in Harlem on Thursday to announce dozens of new initiatives and changes to programs first announced on Earth Day 2007 as part of the city's PlaNYC environmental road map.

Bloomberg's office says the new initiatives include plans to build solar power plants on capped landfills and launch a loan program to help property owners pay for green energy efficiency upgrades.

PlaNYC aims to reduce the city's greenhouse gas emissions 30 percent by 2030. The city says emissions already have dropped 13 percent from 2005 levels.
