New mouse in the house: Brazil unveils species

A new species of mouse has been discovered in Brazil, the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation announced Tuesday.

The Cerradomys goytaca (or Goytaca mouse) was located in the Restinga de Jerutiba National Park in state, the institute said, noting the scientific name was selected by researchers at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

The name of the mostly tree-dwelling rodent comes from that of a local indigenous people, the Goytacazes, the institute said.
