T-Mobile sues over cell-phone record sales
January 24, 2006T-Mobile filed a lawsuit Monday against a Web site that allegedly sells subscriber cell-phone calling records.
The suit filed in King County, Wash., Superior Court seeks an injunction against Locatecell.com to halt alleged attempts to improperly obtain and sell customer records.
The legal action comes amid a public furor over media revelations that cell-phone calling records can be obtained relatively easily, raising fears of privacy invasion and even potential violence in the hands of stalkers and organized crime groups.
"T-Mobile is taking action to prosecute these online data brokers to the fullest extent permitted by the law," said Dave Miller, senior vice president and general counsel, T-Mobile USA. "For the protection of all wireless customers, their illegal actions must be stopped."
T-Mobile also Monday urged Congress to quickly pass legislation to put an end to the illegitimate online brokering of cell records.
