Briefs: eBay's Whitman to leave Gap board

January 24, 2006

Meg Whitman will not stand for re-election to Gap's board of directors, the apparel manufacturer said.

As the head of eBay, the world's most successful online auction house, Whitman has been a much sought-after figure in corporate America and had even been wooed to head Disney last year, an offer she ultimately refused.

On her reason to leave Gap, she stated that "given eBay's recent acquisition and international expansion plans, I will need to devote additional time and resources to the eBay business."

The 48-year-old Whitman has been on Gap's board since 2003.
