Briefs: India's LG Electronics bets on GSM phones

India's LG Electronics has launched a new GSM mobile-phone line it says will greatly expand its business this year.
The company, the No. 3 phone producer in India, told the Hindustan Times it expects its GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) digital-phone business to grow as much as 300 percent in 2006.

LG launched four handsets this week that cater to the high end of the market and will be produced at a company plant with a capacity of 20 million units per month and sold through an expanded dealer network.

LG official H.S. Bhatia told the Times that the plant's initial phone production will be a mere 40,000 per month.
