Officials: Elephant Died of Herpes Virus
Bruce Bohmke, left, deputy director of the Woodland Park Zoo, and lead veterinarian Kelly Helmick, right, talk to reporters Monday, July 2, 2007, in Seattle about the death of "Hansa," the Asian elephant that died unexpectedly last month at the zoo. Bohmke said zoo officials have determined that Hansa died of a previously undiscovered type of "elephant herpes." The disease, which attacked her blood vessels, varied genetically from the types of herpes that have been known to infect Asian and African elephants, scientists determined. (AP Photo/Ted S. Warren)
