Briefs: VoIP may be vulnerable to hack attacks

January 27, 2006

Internet phone connections such as Skype are prime targets for hackers, according to university researchers.

The communications research network groups at Cambridge University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology warned Thursday that "it is only a matter of time before the technique (to attack Voice over Internet Protocol) becomes mainstream."

The researchers said that they have discussed the issue with Skype, which continues to be the global leader in VoIP in terms of the number of subscribers.
