Sony, Samsung to begin talks on building 2.6-bln-dlr LCD plant: report

Japan's Sony is to begin talks with Samsung Electronics of South Korea on building a 2.6-billion-dollar plant to make liquid crystal displays (LCD), a report said Thursday.
Sony aims to start operations at the cutting-edge factory in 2007 to meet surging demand for LCD televisions, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun said.
Their joint investment would reach 300 billion yen (2.6 billion dollars), the economic paper said, adding the plant was likely to be located in South Korea.
The factory would be a second joint LCD plant with Samsung as the pair established their LCD joint venture, S-LCD, in South Korea in April 2004, with each contributing 100 billion yen in capital.
Sony would not confirm the report.
"Nothing has been decided at the moment" Sony spokeswoman Mina Naito said,
declining further comment.
