Germany steps up broadband investment

Deutsche Telekom said Thursday it will connect 10 German cities to a high-speed broadband network by mid-year.
The German carrier said that the connection will be established "based on trust that the necessary political conditions will be introduced."

"The high-speed network will lead to fundamental changes and new perspectives in areas such as e-working, e-health and e-learning. Data transmission in real time and dialog applications with high volumes of data will become reality", said Walter Raizner, a board member responsible for broadband business.

Deutsche Telekom said that a total of $3.64 billion (3 billion euros) will be necessary by 2007 to get the project going, but it will be putting up $606.34 million (500 million euros) itself immediately.
