WiFi coming to London's center city
February 21, 2006The City of London plans to launch WiFi access throughout the city's Square Mile area later this year.
Officials announced this week that the city had joined up with The Cloud, Europe's largest WiFi operator, to provide the service that is expected to have the entire City area covered within six months.
Once operational, the service will provide wireless connectivity to city workers and visitors to the area.
Michael Snyder, chairman of the city's Policy Committee, said in a written statement: "We feel it is important to provide this technology to maintain our position as the world's leading international financial center. City workers and visitors will be able to use wireless broadband to work more efficiently; staying in touch with their office via hand-held devices while on the move."
The network infrastructure will be installed in existing lamp posts, street signs and other fixtures.
