GM recalls pizzas in E. coli outbreak
November 1, 2007General Mills is recalling about 414,000 cases of Totino's and Jeno's frozen pizzas with pepperoni that may be linked to an outbreak of E. coli.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service said the problem was discovered after an investigation by the Tennessee Department of Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention into an outbreak of 21 cases of E. coli O157:H7 in Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia and Wisconsin.
The illnesses occurred between July 20 and Oct. 10, the FSIS said Thursday in a release.
Nine of the 21 people reported having eaten Totino's or Jeno's pizza with pepperoni topping prior to becoming ill. Since July 1 of this year, Totino's and Jeno's have distributed more than 120 million pizzas nationwide.
The recall includes packages of Totino's Original Crisp Crust Party Pizza and Jeno's Crisp 'N Tasty Pizza containing pepperoni or a combination of pepperoni and sausage. The packages show "EST. 7750" inside the USDA mark of inspection as well and a "best if used by" date on or before "02 APR 08 WS."
