Chip project to bring Bluetooth to players

SigmaTel and Infineon are jointly developing semiconductors to enable Bluetooth solutions to be included in portable media players.

The project will combine Infineon's Bluetooth expertise and SigmaTel's radio architectures into a chip that can be incorporated into portable devices such as MP3 players, car audio or even stereo headphones.

"The new Bluetooth chip is optimized for low power consumption and minimum size," said Thomas Pollakowski, manager of the connectivity unit at German-based Infineon.

Pollakowski said Infineon was one of the few chip companies around that has the foundry services with the required radio frequency and Internet Protocol blocks needed for the project.

SigmaTel in Austin will be the exclusive marketer of the new chip.

While the optimal Bluetooth chip is under development, the team will offer Infineon's BlueMoon UniCellular Bluetooth 2.0 solution, a turnkey system that includes Bluetooth profiles and software.
