You don't suppose this has anything to do with the fact that accrediting agencies rate schools mostly on how many letters follow the names of the staff members, staff members get those letters from accredited schools, and that government-funded industries (pretty much all R&D in the U.S.) care only about those letters when hiring their employees?

Nah.
