Michigan hospital prices now listed online

December 18, 2007

The Michigan Health and Hospital Association has started a Web site listing prices for common procedures for 146 nonprofit hospitals.

The site, which went online Monday, not only gives users access to hospital pricing but allows customers to compare prices for each of the state's nonprofit hospitals, the Detroit News reported.

The free Web site, http://www.MIHospitalInform.org, was created to give more transparency in healthcare pricing as premiums, co-payments and deductibles rise.

The hospital association said it hopes the site will make businesses and employees more aware of the costs and quality of procedures covered by health insurance.

Spokeswoman Lori Latham added the site also could be used as a shopping tool for people who are uninsured or are insured under plans with very high deductibles.
