Nearly 70 percent of U.K. uses digital TV

More then 17 million homes in the United Kingdom -- nearly 70 percent -- use digital TV, the most of any nation in the world, according to a report by Ofcom.

The United States comes in second, with 55 percent of viewers using digital TV. No other European country has passed 50 percent.

The report also found that more than 1.1 million households in the United Kingdom acquired digital TV in the last three months of 2005, the most of any three-month period.

Overall, 2.7 million homes were outfitted with digital TV in 2005. By the New Year more U.K. households subscribed to Sky's digital offering than all analog TV users combined.

Ofcom's report said it expects 95 percent of homes in the country to have taken up digital TV by the end of 2010.

Earlier this month U.K. Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell told Parliament that reaching 70 percent (which Ofcom expects to happen sometime in 2006) would be "an important landmark."
