Wistron NeWeb Introduces GW4: Linux Loaded & Android Capable Mobile Device

Wistron NeWeb Corporation demonstrates a Linux loaded, Android capable mobile device at 2008 CES International. The prototype GW4 is otherwise loaded with features and portability. It's a hybrid touchscreen, Bluetooth and WiFi device with a full QWERTY keyboard.

Google's mobile platform, Android may have a ready-to-go handset capable of running it. Wistron NeWeb Corporation, part of the Taiwan based Wistron Group introduced the GW4 mobile phone at 2008 CES International now in progress. The GW4 is a handset that is currently loaded with Linux, but it is capable of running Android.

Wistron NeWeb Corp. plans to load the Google compatible platform within the year, according to Phone Mag. The GW4 has a 2.5 inch OVGA touchscreen. It has a full QWERTY keyboard. It is Bluetooth and WiFi capable. It is reported by Phone Mag to be one of the lightest weight QWERTY available. The GW4 has a 2 megapixel camera

The GW4 will be available to the retail market later in the year. As of this writing there is no official word from the company on the price of the fully loaded device. It is expected to be priced very competitively with carrier subsidies.

There is no official news from Google on their immediate plans to release the platform or develop a partner relationship with a mobile device manufacturer. Other companies are involved in developing mobile devices which may be compatible with Google's platform. The GW4 prototype appears to be the first Linux loaded, Android capable mobile device.
