Briefs: Company creates 3-tier ID card security
Digimarc has created a method of producing identification cards with three tiers of authentication technology, including a distinctive texture.
The ExianEvident 3D process is designed for the banking and retail sectors as well as law enforcement and other agencies requiring high-security identification technology.
"Deterring identity theft and fraud demands staying a step ahead of the criminals," said Robert Jones, chief scientist at the suburban Portland, Ore., company. "The breakthrough architecture of ExianEvident 3D allows issuers to deliver multiple levels of personalization, arming the users of secure driver licenses and IDs with the tools for positive authentication."
The tactile feature enables inspectors to feel the texture of a genuine card. It is combined with high-resolution laser engraving and anti-counterfeiting watermarks readable by machine and comes at a production cost that Digimarc says makes the process competitive with smart cards.
