During WWII US built plant in Louisiana, MO to make fuels including gasoline from coal. In 1947 the plant was producing gasoline below then retail prices. Oil companies got Eisenhower administration to close facility. Searches for microfilmed records show someone removed them from US library repositories in the 1990. Last technical person to visit plant died a few years ago. The oil companies now control this 60 year research.

PS I knew person who debriefed German coal to fuel scientists as part of Project Paper Clip. US was way ahead of Germans in yield, price, and process control. And during WWII Germany used their process for much of their oil and aviation fuel.

Note the article on Black Carbon:
http://www.physor...721.html

It is possible that carbon particle emission from 3rd world contributes more to global warming than CO2. If further analysis confirms this, the pressure will be off CO2 emissions. Coal liquification (with limited seqestration of CO2 produced in the process as suggested above) will "take off" (pardon the pun.)

Such a powerful Air Force should be able to move the market to a truly NEW source of energy. With coal we would just be contributing even more to the worldwide issue of global warming. -->"Because of our size, we can move the market along," Well do it once and for all instead of teasing the consumers with "Hybrid technology" and Hydrogen berning cars. For the hydrogen, the fuel cell is a better option. But what we truly need and want and will buy is a car which can be plugged at home with good power (which can be offered by electric motors) and good autonomy. Air Force should invest in that and move the market to something truly better

Last regime to do this was Hitler's Third Reich.
