(AP) -- Microsoft Corp.'s operating systems run most personal computers around the globe and are a cash cow for the world's largest software maker. But you'd never confuse a Windows user with the passionate fans of Mac OS X or even the free Linux operating system. Unless it's someone running Windows XP, a version Microsoft wants to retire.

I have never fully understood why Microsoft makes upgrades of their operating system at all.

If Microsoft comes out with a new version of their OS, it gets sold on a bizillion new PCs.

If Microsoft doesn't come out with a new version of their OS, the existing version gets sold on a bizillion PCs.

Why bother? It's not like they're actually creating anything worth spending extra money on. How many people actually own their own copy of a Microsoft OS and buy the upgrade at a store?

It's just a huge bundling scheme.

Bundling, yep.. And SLimbaugh used to blather about his causing 'social evolution,' here's M$ working at it for profit. NEW and IMPROVED are worth more than any product.

Vista is entirely too top-heavy and offers little real-world benefit to the average and even above-average user. I presume some of the reason for this is from pressure from hardware manufacturers squeezed by increasingly inexpensive costs. Despite robust marketing, people aren't buying Vista when a perfectly acceptable and efficient OS exists.

Somewhere along the way Microsoft really got into a rut of the same-ol same-ol and stopped thinking outside the box. Until they lay the groundwork for something different, the resistance will only increase. I say ditch the mouse, ditch the keyboard (and taskbar and start menu while you're at it), integrate with the cell & TV and household appliances (we all know this is where home networking is headed), blur the line between entertainment and the personal computer.

I hope microsh1t will choke to death on yahoo! Greedy fks force people to change to worse operating system downgrading their PCs performance just to force them to pay more money! I still use 2000 pro on one on my comps and it has everything that an OS needs...

So you're on the fence?

Sophos, XP licenses (CDKEY Stickers) are easy to find on older broken/outdated computers. And the software is easily obtained by other means.

Don't forget to match the sticker with Home/Professional and OEM/Retail.

Just one more idiotic scheme to say f to the u, c-k-y-o-u-m-s. And that non-sense was blown even more out of proportion with Vista... I don't even know them all... Home, Basic, Business, Ultimate?!

I highly recommend NOT supporting their miserable existence with any more revenue, regardless of the product.

If this is a path you'd like to pursue and are having difficulty locating a sticker, I'll be happy to pass one along for a very low price. They hate me for this.
