Scientists say Midwest quakes poorly understood

April 19, 2008 By DAVID MERCER, Associated Press Writer Scientists say Midwest quakes poorly understood (AP)

Map locates approximate epicenter, extent and seismic zone of origination of a magnitude-5.2 earthquake in the Midwest.

(AP) -- Scientists say they know far too little about Midwestern seismic zones like the one that rumbled to life under southern Illinois Friday morning, but some of what they do know is unnerving.

I wonder. Is this an earthquake in the traditional sense, caused by plates moving against each other? Has science been able to actually detect crustal movement? Or, as I have read elsewhere, are these quakes caused by the crust rebounding from the previous weight of huge glaciers which only recently covered the area.
There is more here to be discovered.
