>China - which rivals the United States as the world's largest emitter of greenhouse gases

Per capita CO2 tonnes 2003: China 2.72; US 19.95; data from www.iaea.org

I will bet this has more to do with the fact that they cannot keep up with coal demand in their country more than any other reason. Currently they have only a 12 day supply on hand and every month it slips further and that provides 70% of their power. They have never had any concern for the environment in the past. So what are they to do? Turn to the world and say send us your technology so we can keep our economy growing and going.

Espionage isn't fast enough. Now they want everyone to just GIVE them our technology! Wow, what hubris.

Superhuman: "...worlds largest emitter..." That's TOTAL emission not per capita. And, 2003 is WAY smaller for China than for US. Five year old data in a dynamic world is often quite misleading.

"While CO2 levels are climbing by 2 parts per million annually -- a rate expected to increase as China and India continue to industrialize --"

Canada's greenhouse gas emissions increased 25 percent between 1990 and 2005,

Is anyone here aware of the fact that China's emissions levels are as they are owing to the facts that:

1) The West has exported its smokestake industries to China; and,
2) The demand from the West for cheap products manufactured from suchbyWere, for example, the U.S. to repatriate those industries which it exported, its emissions levels would be a full 30% higher than at present.

Are we not, therefore, being more than little hypocritical in holding China as being solely responsible for its plight?

Are Americans willing to pay the necessarily higher prices for Chinese goods that will result from China's meeting US demands re. emissions without outside assistance?

There are but 3 choices:
1) Pay to assist China to improving its plants;
2) Pay higher prices so that Chinese industries can afford to improve their plants; or,
3) Live with the present situation.
