Families will make case for vaccine link to autism

May 11, 2008 By KEVIN FREKING, Associated Press Writer

(AP) -- Families claiming that a mercury-based preservative in vaccines triggers autism will challenge mainstream medicine Monday as they take their case to a federal court. They seek vindication and financial redress from a government fund that helps people injured by shots.

The most prominent attorney working in vaccine compensation litigation is Mr. Clifford J. Shoemaker, he gets paid whether or not he wins. He made $584,449.29 between 2006-2007 (5 cases awarded, 18 rejected).

Mr. Shoemaker is a long time business partner of Dr. Mark Geier. Dr. Geier wrote several papers claiming that mercury in vaccines causes autism. Dr. Geier filed three patent applications on the use of the drug Lupron and mercury chelation therapy as a cure for autism.

Mr. Shoemaker uses Dr. Geier as an expert witness in many of his cases and in September 2005, Mr. Shoemaker founded the tax exempt "Institute for Chronic Illnesses" (IRB number: IRB00005375) to fund Dr. Geier's autism-mercury research.
