Museum confirms discovery of rare fossil

(AP) -- Scientists with the Virginia Museum of Natural History have confirmed the discovery of a 500 million-year-old fossil called a stromatolite.

    Shark Bay on the southern coast of Australia is the site of much stromatalite growth including if I recall correctly, contemporary growth..

    I have seen stromatalite remains in upstate New York.

    Such finds on Virginia do not seem particularly exciting for a creature/structure with worlwide distribution.
