Salmonella toll tops 1,000; peppers now eyed

By LAURAN NEERGAARD , AP Medical Writer, Medicine & Health / Diseases
(AP) -- More than 1,000 people now are confirmed ill from salmonella initially linked to raw tomatoes, a grim milestone Wednesday that makes this the worst foodborne outbreak in at least a decade. Adding to the confusion, the government is warning certain people to avoid types of hot peppers, too.

I don't know about other sufferer of salmonella- but for me-downing two fresh cloves of garlic mashed in a cup, then filled with warm water, garlic and all, does the job. An age-old cure for food poisoning. I know it tastes horrible, but 30 minutes is all it takes to calm down the vomiting, so i guess it's not like the end of the world!

Yep. Cures what ails ya. If you ain't sick then it'll take care of that too.

Stuff with no side effects generally has no effect at all.

vlam67, I think you're right that vomiting is underrated as a way to get rid of bad food. But salmonella takes between 8 and 72 hours to develop symptoms. I.e., if I understand this correctly, the food that caused the illness could already be "long gone" in the normal way. Here's the USDA on salmonella: www.fsis.usda.gov...estions_&_Answers/index.asp

There are a few medical sources that feel the immune system may have reached a threshold which just happens to be below what is needed to ward off this level of a salmonella outbreak. As there is an increase in our food processing, it is estimated that the immune system suffers a toll and this may be one result.
