No plan to cut PlayStation 3 price: Sony

Sony has no plan to cut the price of its PlayStation 3 game console, the company's chief financial officer Nobuyuki Oneda said Friday.
"This year, our strategy is not to sell more quantity for PS3 but to concentrate on profitability," Oneda told a forum in Singapore. "Our plan is not to reduce the price."

His comments followed a report in the Wall Street Journal which said Microsoft plans to cut the price on a popular model of its Xbox 360 game console in an effort to boost sales in the face of stronger competition from rival Sony.

The Journal report cited people familiar with the matter and said the price cut would come as early as Sunday.

Oneda also said he expects Sony's PS3 operations as well as the broader game segment to be profitable for the current year ending March 2009.

I guess they make the majority of profits from games and accessories. I'm not surprised they haven't come down in price for the simple fact it also acts as a blue-ray dvd player which are still costing $300plus.

Wii has absolutely crushed the competition and has forced Microsoft to make desperate claims such as "Xbox 360 is the winner of the new generation console race (not counting Wii as a new generation console)" and "People graduate to Xbox 360 from the Wii."

Sony, perhaps one of the few companies as pathetic as, if not more so, than Microsoft is only going to nose dive faster and faster with such short sightedness. I'll enjoy their explosive final demise (if you don't consider them a complete failure already).

As mentioned, the PS3 is nothing but a glorified Blu-ray player, a format which itself will be replaced within a year.

These companies fail to realize or accept the technological paradigm shift that has been occurring and refuse to innovate or deviate from their greed driven monetary goals.

Are you saying Sony and Microsoft as a company are complete failures??? In no way do I believe the dark side will prevail but to think that both companies are destined to fail in the near future is short sighted in itself.
