Pathetic. The Russian system works perfectly but NASA has to waste money reinventing the wheel because they're rednecks.

Without upgrades now, it would be impossible to continue space exploration.

In an ion or similar atomic drive urine would work as fuel.

The complaint was the solids in it causing clogs. This would still be the case if you used it as reaction mass in an ion engine.

I agree with using established proven technology. There is a lot to be said for "if it aint brokent then don't fix it." However I disagree with your tone. NASA has accomplished a great deal in its history. They do need to change with times. They should consider a super sized X prize program. What I have seen of SpaceShip 1 is very impressive returns on the puny level of prize money. They need to expand their remit to space mirrors and space elevators.
This fixation with Mars is a distraction. The moon provides a superior platform for extra terrestrial base station. It always faces the earth the same way for one thing enabling easy 24 x 7 communications. It does not take years for people to get to the moon. It is looking like there is water on the moon.
