Gore sets energy goal for next president to heed

By RON FOURNIER and DINA CAPPIELLO , Associated Press Writers, Space & Earth science / Environment
(AP) -- Just as John F. Kennedy set his sights on the moon, Al Gore is challenging the nation to produce every kilowatt of electricity through wind, sun and other Earth-friendly energy sources within 10 years, an audacious goal he hopes the next president will embrace.

"I hope to contribute to a new political environment in this country that will allow the next president to do what I think the next president is going to think is the right thing to do,"

Can someone who speaks muttonhead please translate for me?

The translation is not better than the untranslated text. It says that Al Gore thinks the next president will be as muttonheaded as he is.

I really hate seeing Al Gore's microvision compared to the broad vision which resulted in our trips to the moon.

Hello! The earth is NOT warming. Don't listen to NOAA or GISS. They use data that has been adjusted and homogenized beyond all recognition. Look at satellite data. Here is a sample of Recent June temperatures.

Mr. Gore and Mr. Hansen you have mislead the world long enough. You have been weighed and found wanting. The game is up.

MikeB,

Don't mistake year-to-year variations as a trend. The graph that you link DOES indicate an overall increase in temperature. The minimums, maximums and average are increasing over the length of time indicated on that graph. There will always be variations from year-to-year, the discussed problem is the overall trend.

Tes, Trends change and are changing now. There are also variations decade-to-decade, century-tocentury, millenium-to-millenium and so on ad infinitum. Don't think the trend in our puny lifespan indicates anything at all. If you want data don't count on GISS. My point stands.

Sure, tell it to the polar bears... and me, come September and the artic ocean is more ice free than at any time in recorded (and determined) history.

Arctic sea ice is not melting as fast as Al Gore would like.
2008 gained a little on 2007 earlier this month, but remains over 900,000 sq km behind for the same julian day last year. Once again 2008 failed to break 100,000 sq km. of arctic sea ice melt today. Three weeks from today 2007 was at 5.5 million sq km. To catch up, 2008 would have to average over 130,000 sq km day every day for the next 3 weeks when it has only had an occasional 100,000 sq km per day melt to date. (July 17, 2008)
The polar bears will have plenty of ice in september.

I'm selling carbon credits under that bridge over the swamp land I'd like to sell, too. All profits go to the Gore presidential library.

See this to understand 2008 position in the sea ice race.

Gore should be questioned about and required to disclose all of his investments and other financial interests connected with carbon trading and renewable energy. His conflicts of interest should destroy his credibility.

Gore's investments can have several meanings. Firstly, the man is committed to ending global warming and therefore he puts his money where his mouth is. Alternatively, he is a global warming salesman and stands to make a profit from something which is debated. My opinion is the world is at high risk from the effects global warming, by doing nothing we deny there is any risk. It is not a question of yes or no is it true. There is a risk that needs to be mitigated and action is needed. Regardless of the degree of risk I see a bright future by taking action on sustainable energy development for world as a whole.

Quite the opposite. Going to the moon was just a pissing contest with USSR to show which state had the biggest weener. It cost freaken Billions, didn't achieve all that much and nobody has been back there since. Manned space flight has been a bit of a dead end.

In contrast, converting all the nation's power sources to environmentally friendly ones could avert an ecological catastrophe, sever the dependence on oil from middle east and maybe even save the planet!!!

Regardless if whether you think CO2 emission are causing global warming, burning coal produces produces toxins in the atmosphere and pollutes it. It would be worth it just to stop that and have a clean environment.

when you put it all in perspective.

Al Gore, Taxpayer Money, & His Private Investments

Am I the only person, aside from right wing nutcases, who thinks it would be appropriate for the media to identify Albert Gore as follows?

The former Vice President and currently the chairman of the for-profit Generation Investment Management mutual fund which invests in companies that would significantly benefit financially if Mr. Gore's proposals regarding government energy policy were adopted.

I do not mean to imply that Gore does not believe what he is saying; I can't know that. The point is that Gore, through his investment fund, stands to profit greatly if government funds begin pouring into companies in which Generation Investment Management has taken large equity positions, and those are precisely the kind of companies that Gore's fund invests does invest in.

Disclosure is what's needed. Gore is not some sort of impartial arbiter concerning the question of Global Warming. In fact, he's put his money where his mouth is...and now wants American taxpayers to do the same.

Basically, So what?

The current US government is made up of former oil CEO's and Execs. They've plenty to gain from oil wars in the middle east and keeping the the status quo of burning insane amount of fossil fuels.

With everything, somebody will stand to gain financially. That doesn't reflect on whether its a good idea or not.

The question to ask yourself is not if Al Gore (or anyone else) might benefit financially from this, but is this a good idea for the country, the public, the world?

There is that wonderful phrase, cutting of your nose to spite your face!

You're arrogant, Gregori, both in your reply to my post and to the previous comment you made.

In your reply to me, for example, you pose a question, the implication being that one's own financial self-interests are immaterial when judging that person's position on a particular isse.

Then, unwittingly of course, you go on to answer the question in your next paragraph, thereby refuting your own arrogant point.

Your third paragraph begins with an asseration--you like making asserations, I can tell--that is patently not true. Your second sentence sets up the straw-man that I somewhere said I think Gore's position is a "bad" one; except I never said that.

I would agree with your fourth paragraph if the first word were changed from "The" to "Another."

Your previous post was a mere assemblage of assertions that, presumably, you agree with. And even though that's all it was, you still maintain your arrogant tone in it as well.

[If you care to see my position on the Climate Change debate and Gore's presumptuous proposal to use American taxpayer money to line his own pockets, you are welcome to go to my blog at: http://ProteanPer...pot.com.]

And do yourself a favor, don't be so arrogant...you're not smart enough to get away with it.

well well well

You miss the point entirely. Somebody is always going to profit no matter what you do. The current administration help their corporate buddies profit from the public by doing nothing whilst the price of oil and gas sky rockets.

That's neither here nor there. The big issue is whether this would be a good idea for the environment and America

Of course it easier to make personal attacks and conspiracies against Al Gore than to debate whether this is a good idea for the environment or not, that requires scientific knowledge....

All these comments from people that think global warming isnt happening are just either uneducated or stupid. You are just trying to justification to yourself that you can still drive your hummer and crank your AC all day and there will be no ill effects on the climate to my kids or my kids kids. Its just plain selfishness.

Lets just forget about global warming for a minute and look at the big picture of global climate. There has already been ice ages in earths past history, doesn%u2019t history repeat itself? Therefore even if you think global warming isnt happening and its all just a scam we still need to learn how to control our global environment eventually to survive on this planet. We are now taking the basic steps toward understanding how to control our environment for the future.

Re> Al Gore, Taxpayer Money, & His Private Investments

Gore also put his money behind another thing he did politically help: the internet. He's about 100M richer today as a direct (Google) and indirect (Apple) result. I'd rather have someone with some actual success to his name (Gore) propose a grand plan than to listen to a guy (Bush) whose only success was to quit drinking ... and even that was probably a bad idea in hindsight.

I thought the nut cases were convinced by tons of data that the world is in fact warming, and had switched their argument to: "but it ain't us, it's the " What gives dudes?

All those scientist who actually study the data are either deluded, in a vast conspiracy, just can't read the web to pull up a few charts to misunderstand ... or else they are correct that we're warming. I'm going with the consensus. Now lets work on the carbon that I suspect is in fact doing the warming. Hard to believe that even though our home is so big that we can still fowl our cage. And no God to come down and stop us either.

I was really surprised when I saw that the information about Gore was given such a low rating. Actually I don't know whether or not Gore is only using the data about the warming of the world for his own benefit. But the fact remains that he is actually right. Something must be done about pollution caused by human activities. It only takes a bit of logic to realize that that fuel consumption of all kinds including all the cars and factories is polluting the air. Just today there was an article in one of our newspapers about all the forest fires we have been having here in Turkey. It turns out that forests where there are goats are less likely to be affected by fires because the goats eat up the underbrush that leads to fires. I only mention this because forest fires are another source of air pollution. Disturbance of overall ecological balance is another danger facing us. There is another fact that must be kept in mind. Back during the ice ages there was much land that is now underwater as a result of the melting of the ice. When the ice in the polar regions melt it won't just be the polar bears and other polar animals that will be in trouble. Cities like New York that are near the sea will be underwater eventually. There is just one more point I'd like to make. It would seem from the comments that what is good for Americans is the important thing. Please remember that Americans are not the only people in the world and that all people everywhere have the right or should have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
