LA blocks new fast-food outlets from poor areas (Update)

July 29, 2008 By CHRISTINA HOAG , Associated Press Writer LA blocks new fast-food outlets from poor areas (AP)

Customers enter a McDonald's restaurant in Los Angeles on Monday, July 28, 2008. In South Los Angeles, fast food is also the easiest cuisine to find, and that's a problem for elected officials who see it as an unhealthy source of calories and cholesterol. The City Council is poised to vote Tuesday on a moratorium on new fast-food restaurants in a swath of the city where a proliferation of such eateries goes hand in hand with more fat adults and chunky children than other areas of Los Angeles. (AP) -- City officials are putting South Los Angeles on a diet. The City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to place a moratorium on new fast food restaurants in an impoverished swath of the city with a proliferation of such eateries and above average rates of obesity.

While we're eliminating people's freedom to make their own choices, I say we require 2 high end steakhouses for every 3 fast food restaurants, all fast food restaurants must be at the top of a hill with parking only at the bottom and stairs for access, fast food restaurants may only serve soy based food, and actually, no, let's make that every restaurant (including the steakhouses, unless they apply for an exception using form 734AR-6, or are eligible due to status as a 9271 organization or existed prior to the 1970s AND have not received a sanitation grade of less than A for the last 7 years, AND pay a special fee), and people may not purchase lottery tickets without first demonstrating financial records to prove ability to purchase food for disabled or minor family members, and soda may only be served on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and oh, most importantly of all, we should tax the hell out of every type of restaurant, and the people who eat at them, and those who don't too... Sounds like a great Democrat proposal for the coming year...
