Profits up over 47 pct at Taiwan's Acer
Taiwan's Acer Inc. said Friday its net profit for the second quarter rose 47.5 percent from a year earlier on expanded notebook computer shipments.
Acer, the world's third largest personal computer vendor, posted 2.92 billion Taiwan dollars (95.4 million US) in net profit in the April-June period, compared with 1.98 billion dollars a year earlier.
"We saw increased notebook computer shipments in all of our major markets, in particular Europe, in the second quarter. Sales are expected to grow in the third quarter," an Acer spokesman said.
Europe accounts for about half of the company's sales.
In the April-June period, Acer's operating profit rose 38.3 percent year-on-year to 2.71 billion dollars and sales increased 33.5 percent to 124.81 billion dollars.
However, net profit in the first half of this year fell 23.1 percent from a year earlier to 5.88 billion dollars due to the absence of non-core business gains, the spokesman said.
