@MrFred: Military and space research are always the primary drivers for new research. Later is gets ported to more civilian uses. That is the way of the world - money is the driver and let's face it, bettering disabled patients lives is not a high-profit area.

I am in no way demonizing military or space research - I think they are necessary and great. I'm just pointing out the realities.

Also, MrFred, what makes you assume that soldiers and war are always destructive? The U.S. military has been a major peacekeeping force in the last couple of decades - Bosnia, Afghanistan, and now Iraq. Yes, Iraq. If you don't listen to the media, but listen to the Iraqi people, you will know the good that the U.S. is doing there. If it wasn't for the U.S. ousting the Taliban, they would still be an oppressed people (applies to Afghanistan also). The U.S. will leave as soon as they are able - they want to ensure that the legitimate Iraqi government can take care of itself first.

As far as the war in Iraq - I don't know how anyone can reasonably argue that ousting Saddaam was a bad thing. That murdering maniac ordered the deaths of over 100,000 of his own people.

So lets say that they use the 4 million effectively and accomplish this goal, and the equipment required can be reduced enough in size to fit inside a standard issue helmet.Then what? Even if they find a way to make it for 4 000.00 $ that is a pretty expensive freakin' helmet, and what if the guy gets shot because he has to aim his gaze away from the action in order to transmit a "thought"?

Also to those thinking that all military equipment is destructive, think on it this way.

Faster battlefield communications will prevent civilian casualties when all your troops know the FoF status of a group of people because the scout correctly ID'ed them as civilians. Cease fire and hold your fire orders won't be misinterpreted due to ambient noise and best of all soldiers won't have to make noise if trying to avoid hostiles in a civilian zone. It'd be a big boon to reducing "collateral damage" if communications was improved in this manner.

The basic structure presented is

Brain interface < - > processor < - > transceiver < - > processor < - > interface < - > Brain

The processor changing "thoughts" into speak, and speak into "thoughts"

instead, skip the processor bit, so that the EEG signals of one person is sent to another and played straight back to the other.

The brain is a remarkable mechanism and doesn't need technology in the way. with training the brain would learn what these signals mean.

i do imagine very interesting possibilities can be opened if we link our brain neurons on a low level, without ever trying to analyze or process the signals. but i want to make it clear - it is pure speculation on my part.

there are arguments against such a raw, low-level connection.
it will be a bit of a "security risk"... if two people are connected like this and their brains adapt and make something useful out of this connection, cool... but it could also have dangerous side-effects as well - transmitting pain, confusion, influencing each-other's thoughts and mood. these effects might also turn out to be "skewed" in one direction only, so one of the persons can dominate and control the other.

and also, likely no two pairs of people that are connected this way will adapt to it in the same way and use it with the same signals. that means even after you adapt to such a connection with someone, you still can not plug him off and plug someone else and expect everything to keep working. re-adaptation this second time might turn out slower, harder or even impossible due to the neural pathways that have been established in your brain from the first connection.
though, who knows? it may as well turn out easier, and it may turn out the majority of our brains adapt to work with such a connection in a compatible way....

i believe a grown up brain will adapt to such drastic changes quite hard. current research has shown that we do have a hope of controlling an artificial appendage, or understanding an artificial input such as ear or eye, if they are made to work on the same or similar brain signals, in the same brain areas, as the body parts we already learned to control naturally. but learning to make sense of a completely new body part or signal type is a different topic - maybe it will be only possible when it is implanted very soon after birth and the brain can spend a long time growing up with it, like it does with our real body.

one potential set-up i have wondered about is, if two people are linked with a large enough number of neurons very early in their development, as babies or even as early as embryos, and the connection is kept on at all times. what could that be like?

maybe they will grow up and learn to think and speak and act like just one personality, one identity with two bodies. just an ordinary person, but "twice as smart" because he has twice as big a brain?
