Climate negotiators reconvene this week in Ghana

August 21st, 2008 By ARTHUR MAX , Associated Press Writer

(AP) -- Negotiators meet in Ghana this week to resume work on a new climate change treaty and discuss ways to prod developing countries to join the fight against global warming. But the latest round of talks comes at an awkward moment, with the world's poor more worried about the immediate cost of food and fuel than the uncertain long-term effects of climate change.

I'm skimming through a Jan/07 back issue of Chemical Engineering, an water filtration industry employee says universities are not teaching enough water filtration in curriculums.
If true, it might make sense for international conference participants to work out some way to accelerate the number of water filtration/desalination and agriculture graduates.
Things like engineering underground aquifers, soil-less crops, etc. A shared water shortage is the best catalyst for Mideast I see happening.

The "Nobel Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change" won a Nobel Peace Prize! If I recall correctly there was some worry that a peace prize wouldn't be awarded that year because there was nobody engaged in and significant peace initiatives. (You could say that Al Gore and the IPCC got the booby prize.)

More to the point, the IPCC and Al Gore didn't get even nominated for any of the many scientific prizes. Why?

Because they didn't do the science; they aggregated and relayed scientific findings.

    1) That is not what Nobel prizes are awarded for. They were awarded for doing science.

    2) If you pick a choose what your going to aggregate, to reach a predetermined result, it's normally refered to as propaganda.

    1. The Nobel Peace price is not. Nor is the Nobel price for Literature.

    2. Picking and choosing? Propaganda? Someone has been reading too many conspiracy theories without paying attention to the body of scientific data concerning the subject.

On #1 your right. I'd meant to say "used to be awarded for".

On #2, I don't do conspiracy. I believe any that can be explained by stupidity and/or greed normally are due to stupidity and/or greed. Fot the rest look up the definition for propaganda, here are 2 from different sources:
    a) From Wikipedia:
"Propaganda is a concerted set of messages aimed at influencing the opinions or behaviors of large numbers of people. As opposed to impartially providing information, propaganda in its most basic sense presents information in order to influence its audience."

    b) The DoD definition is:
"Any form of communication in support of national objectives designed to influence the opinions, emotions, attitudes, or behavior of any group in order to benefit the sponsor, either directly or indirectly."
