Privacy features let you erase your tracks online

September 11th, 2008 By Lou Dolinar

Enough about "porn mode" in Internet Explorer 8.0. The new privacy features previewed in the recent beta 2 are a good idea.

The title is wrong, the privacy feature actually allows you stop recording your actions not erase and also it stops the recording of offline data not online. The online tracks (the ones left in remote computers you pass through while browsing) are still there.

Sending of referrer headers. If you visit site A, site B can read this to tell who sent you; this is the basis of "click through" advertising referrals.

And then there is this, aimed straight at google since thats how they make much of their revenue.

How about firefox with cache turned off, running on Ubuntu installed under xp as a virtual drive using Wubi. With a few clicks I can wipe out the entire OS and replace it with my "backup image". Its easy to do, does not look suspicious and will save you from all but a subpoena to your ISP. I use Torpark as well, but that is overkill most of the time.
