Site Lines: It's time for rumblin', stumblin' in college football
Normally, The Sacramento Bee's Sports department is nothing like those "This is SportsCenter" commercials. It's more laid-back and the celebrities rarely file through.
That was until this week, when I heard the USC Trojan Marching Band stomping through the department playing "Louie, Louie." Or I thought it was the USC band, until I found out it was my crack research staff leading a local junior high ensemble up the aisles. No wonder they couldn't hit those high notes.
My researchers were all geeked for college football - and this week's USC-Ohio State matchup - and left me a list of sites about the sport. Needless to say, my researchers have been suspended for a week and the band has been banned from Midtown, after we lured them out of the building with a case of Monster energy drink.
I wish it was that easy to lead my researchers to work.
Tellshow BCS
Site: http://www.tellshowbcs.com
The skinny: This is a spartan site that, despite its lack of bells and whistles, tells you quickly who leads the Bowl Championship Series standings before they come out.
The call: The creators do a good job of starting the BCS rankings a month before they come out. They have to do some adjusting early in the season, but they understand how the BCS rankings work better than the network analysts do. If you believe in polls, check out this site.
Rivals.com
Site: http://www.rivals.com
The skinny: The guys at Rivals take college sports seriously. They focus on college football and recruiting. In fact, they have gained a national reputation for their recruiting lists and their depth of reporting on the subject.
The call: Rivals has created a brand that is known for solid college football news. They have cub reporters covering every Division I-A team, and the fans benefit. These guys got so good, they were bought out by Yahoo! Sports last year.
College Football Hall of Fame
Site: http://www.collegefootball.org
The skinny: If you want to know the history of the game, dive into this site. It is the Web home of the sport's Hall of Fame in South Bend, Ind.
The call: It's mostly a shill site for the Hall, but it buries some very good unique content, like articles on "This week in college football" or a visual history of black college football. The stuff is worth digging deep for.
College Football Talk
Site: http://www.collegefootball talk.com
The skinny: Mike Florio, the same guy who brings you the provocative Pro Football Talk, produces College Football Talk. It's unlike other college football sites because of its edgy content. Expect the good and the bad news of the sport with Florio's spin.
The call: It's a site not only good for its collection of college football news, but also the ability to poke fun at the sport. The "Rumor Mill" and "Turd Watch" are two of the site's highlights, although the "Turd Standings" need to be updated more often.
