For dinner: Genetically altered 'super chicken'

September 18, 2008 By RICARDO ALONSO-ZALDIVAR , Associated Press Writer

(AP) -- Super Chicken strutted a step closer to the dinner table Thursday. The government said it will start considering proposals to sell genetically engineered animals as food, a move that could lead to faster-growing fish, cattle that can resist mad cow disease or perhaps heart-healthier eggs laid by a new breed of chickens.

I like the medical aspects of this, but the food should at the very least require labels and tracking. I would prefer knowing what had been changed and the likelyhood that the modified proteins wouldn't you know kill me. I'm going to go the same dirrection as I do with any other group pushing for a change. The burden of proof should rest on the ones proclaiming it's validity, not everyone else to prove it wrong.

I wonder how things are going with PETA's contest to develop the first vat-grown chicken meat, sans nervous system. If people are freaking about genetic engineering, their heads will explode over *that* idea.

I've been waiting for vat-grown clones of ourselves, sans nervous systems, that we can exploit for parts. Also, just to point out the degree of public paranoia concerning the very word "cloning": According to surveys most people also reject eating cloned fruits and vegetables! If you know anything about agricultural plant propagation this is hilarious and sad.
