October 24, 2008

Cambridge University confirmed on Friday Oct. 24, 2008 that Hawking would retire as Lucasian Professor of Mathematics, a title once held by Isaac Newton, at the end of the academic year in September. He will take the title of Emeritus Lucasian Professor of Mathematics. University policy is that officeholders must retire at the end of the academic year in which they become 67. Hawking will reach that milestone on Jan. 8. (AP Photo/Markus Schreiber)
