Foes of stem cell research now face tough battle

This argument is seriously flawed. Life does not begin at conception, life began billions of years ago. Both egg and sperm cells are very much alive.
Of course trying to save all of them is absurd, especially considering the number of sperm cells males produce - even if every human egg produced were to be used the shortage would be astronomical (that particular sperm cells from which we came from were *INCREDIBLY* lucky).
