Ethanol sales for 2008 for the first time are outpacing those of gasoline in Brazil, a top ethanol producer, the National Petroleum Agency reported Tuesday.

Sugar cane doesn't grow all that well in the US and manual labour is not as cheap.
Actually, they use mechanized process as far as I know. And the US could use alcohol from other sources.
