Delay in analog TV shutdown presents challenges

January 24, 2009 By JOELLE TESSLER , AP Technology Writer

(AP) -- With the clock ticking toward the Feb. 17 deadline for TV broadcasters to shut off their analog signals and go entirely digital, analysts say more than 6.5 million households are not ready. Now Congress appears poised to postpone the transition to June - but a delay could bring its own problems.

More than 90% of expect something to happen Feb 17th, why would you cater to the single digit percent and delay it?

Also, by "6.5 million are not ready" does this mean that 6.5 million know they need to do something and are simply procrastinating? The deadline of Feb 17th will make them ready; changing it to June 12th would give them a reason to continue waiting -- and then in May will we hear calls to delay it until October since X million are unready?

For once, just stick to the plan. It works out best for everyone except the single digit percent of Americans who are too lazy to buy a box. Fund the program to get coupons if these people cannot afford one but are otherwise aware and ready to buy a box.

So...We're going to delay it because less than 5% of Americans can't go without basic television in their own home for four months?

Of course its a$$ backwards and makes zero sense to delay; its a democratic liberal (Obama) core principal to cater to inept morons, thus cultivating and encouraging more such government needing voters, thus increasing dependancy and the size of government. Whats scary to me is that this is not even about necessities, rights, but about a recreational device. The Obama mind is a simple one if he thinks gov is the answer at every turn, even in assinine cases like this. Please raise the voting age to 28 to save the country!.... [rant is in context]

Television is not a recreational device and is, to politicians, the essential mechanism for promulgating their ideas and policies. The Bush administration, as usual, completely hosed the pooch on this one, wildly underestimating the needed funds for an orderly changeover, maybe because they would be out of power when it happened. Now there is behind-the-scenes pressure from the cable and satellite industries not to delay the changeover, hoping to force many to hook up to their networks or services. I say, go ahead and cut it off--the stump will heal quickly.

Our "Spectrum Space" is being taken away from us with not so much as a "by your leave"! If "digital" is so wonderful give THAT to the people who want our channels and make THEM buy converters! These broadcasters bought a LICENSE to use this space!

This is an excellent proposal! ...waste the capital of the high tech industries and the recession will be even deeper! Gotta love those politicians! They really do know how to make themselves invaluable to the mentally challenged that continue to elect them!

NOTE to the sarcasm challenged: this is SARCASM, dripping (I wish) with the blood of foolish politicians that can give away TRILLIONS by printing paper money (or just plain leaving it "virtual" in the banking system) but can't print enough coupons to help the 5% technology challenged buy a converter.
