Mobile phone makers promise standardised charger

Leading mobile phone manufacturers have said they have agreed to produce a standardised charger for the industry in a move set to save money for consumers and reduce waste.

Leading mobile phone makers had good news for anyone with a draw or cupboard full of old phone chargers on Tuesday: the industry plans to standardise the device to make a one-size-fits-all.

There is a universal charger design already in use by many portable electronic devices. It's called USB.

Yes, this is hardly news. China has had mandatory micro USB charging sockets on their phones for a couple of years now. I can't figure out why the rest of the world is taking so long to catch up.
