A severe vomiting sickness with chronic cannabis abuse

March 20, 2009

Marijuana, a commonly abused drug among high school and college students is linked to a severe form of vomiting syndrome and compulsive bathing behavior. This form of severe vomiting sickness is increasingly recognized with widespread abuse of marijuana. The syndrome usually subsides with strict abstinence from marijuana abuse.

This obscure clinical manifestation of due to chronic abuse of , recognized by Dr. Sontineni and his colleagues at the Creighton University of Omaha, NE, was published on March 14, 2009 World Journal of Gastroenterology.

Recent research into the of cannabis has led to the identification of different receptor types including two specific types that mediate neuropsychiatric and immunologic effects.

According to Dr. Sontineni, doctors and health care workers currently under recognize the syndrome leading to delayed diagnosis and expensive diagnostic investigations. Increasing consistent use of marijuana among United States populations, particularly young people, over several years will see a steady rise in the number of cases diagnosed each year.

The syndrome was first recognized in Australia around the Adelaide hills. The exact mechanism leading to generation of these symptoms, why it appears only after several years of and why compulsive hot showering behavior relieves the symptoms is still under scientific investigation.

The recognition of this novel syndrome and increasing physician awareness is supported by the Department of Medicine at Creighton University Medical Center. Similarly, scientists and doctors at other institutions worldwide are beginning to identify more cases with this new syndrome as a result of chronic marijuana abuse among populations.

Well, it seems that I did not smoke enough, oh my G, I need to hit that bong more, which I think is frankly impossible. That, or this article is just bullshit... Or is possible that they confuse marijuana with alcohol?

It's called an allergy. The researchers failed to tell you that though.

If you were allergic to daffodils and smoked those you'd get the exact same symptoms, hot showering relief and all.

Allergies don't explain the two year delay in onset.

Yeah, I think I would have definitely shown signs if I was susceptible to this, but alas, I may never know...

A lot of allergies have a delayed onset, like shell fish.

this is just a bunch of bullshit. ive been smoking for about 20 years in quantities most only imagine, and never once has anything like this happened to me, nor anyone I know. This is just yet another attempt to keep marijuana illegal.

Exactly, Lucky. I've been smoking about twice as long, and I'm here to tell you it's clear sailing ahead. This article is nothing but evil FUD.

Everyone's biology is different. I'm sure this article is legit, notice the lack of statistical average for use vs. effect.

It just goes to show the lack of research on the substance. I'm sure the article and it's rammifications are legitimate, however, not so for all users.

And what of all the other people I've met and smoked with, over the past four decades? No-one I know has ever heard of such behaviour occurring. Compulsive showering? Come on! Until I see some verifiable proof, I'm calling bullshit on it.

I've been smoking for 40 years, and never had that reaction either. However, I have known several female mega-smokers that exhibited those symptoms. Maybe there is something to it. Fortunately, it doesn't seem to affect a large number of people, and apparently it can be treated by stopping. Still beats alcohol and should be legal.

This article is pretty lame attempt at Propaganda!

When will the governments stop being a puppet to the drug corporations and give us our freedom of choice back? Well suppose I have the freedom already but being able to buy from a shop instead of a dealer would be a nice luxury, aswell as not being labelled a criminal for enjoying a chill.

Wait a minute guys, this report may be completely valid. What they failed to mention is the delivery method of the cannabis used by the young persons sampled. Smoking cannabis by combustion can burn the tissues of the esophagus and lungs and create severe coughing spasms. These coughing spasms can (and often do!) trigger nausea.

Steam from hot showers can relieve these coughing fits and alleviate the nausea triggered by them.

I am willing to bet that smoking by combustion and severe coughing was common to every case reported.

This is just another reason why we need to educate ourselves on the proper way to take cannabis, and this is either through ingestion or vaporization.

I was talking to a guy last night who is a bit chronic when it comes to his pot. He was complaining that he keeps getting sick to his stomache, sometimes vomiting, and hasn't noticed a pattern as to why. He said the doctor hasn't been able to diagnose anything wrong yet but that he's having hot baths all the time because after about 30 minutes in the tub his stomache ache goes away. He's even at the point where he'll be awakened at night with nausea and have a hot bath at 4 am, then go back to bed.

I have to say that I suffer from whatever this ailment is. I have seen multiple doctors, and been through many procedures to diagnose it (unsuccessfully).

I tend to think it is partly psychological though, because a lot of times I start to get the illness moments before I even smoke.

During and after I smoke I will become violently ill, grasping both arms around my stomach and grimacing. Sometimes it will lead to uncontrollable vomiting.

One of the oddest things, is a lot of times when I have nothing in my stomach the vomit will be foamy and white.

I really hope this study goes somewhere, because I really want to know what it is all about.

STAGGERBOT and Pete63:

How is the cannabis being taken? Is it by smoking? My theory is that the damage to the throat and lungs combined with the heavy residue left by burning is causing this condition.

What happens when the cannabis is eaten or vape'd? Do the symptoms appear?

yeah, and reading this sort of crap makes one vomit and then get stoned to get rid of the nonsense.
I think we should force the govt. to accept a 10 dollar an oz. federal tax on pot in order to get rid of the sickening financial crisis, and to stop the turf war killings.

It is being smoked.

This is a good theory. I may try and use a vaporizer.

I seem to remember there is a spot right next to where the stomach meets the esophagus that is connected to the vomit reflex. It must be some sort of nerve cluster. If this area gets burned or coated with smoke resin, it may become irritated and this may be the source of the nausea.

Treat your body right and take your herbs the right way.
