SKorea to spend 3.4 bln dlrs on green IT: officials
May 13, 2009South Korea said Wednesday it will spend more than three billion dollars over the next five years to develop information technology as an "eco-friendly" growth engine.
The Presidential Committee on Green Growth said the government would plough 4.2 trillion won (3.4 billion dollars) until 2013 into 10 key projects.
They include creating energy-saving versions of products like personal computers, TVs, displays and servers, as well as developing energy-efficient IT service networks including high-speed Internet lines.
Others include the construction of eco-friendly schools using digitised textbooks, electric screens to replace blackboard and chalk, and the application of IT technologies to reduce energy consumption in manufacturing.
The plans are part of the "Green New Deal" announced early this year, aimed at developing environmentally friendly industries to become the country's new economic driver.
