GE to open advanced tech center in Michigan

Jeff Immelt, Chairman and CEO of General Electric, announces that GE will open an advanced manufacturing technology and software center in Michigan during a press conference in Birmingham, Michigan. The center could create more than 1,100 job in the coming years.
General Electric announced plans Friday to open an "advanced manufacturing technology and software center" in Michigan that could create more than 1,100 job in the coming years.
The center will include a research and development facility and "will house scientists and engineers who will develop next generation manufacturing technologies for GE's leading renewable energy, aircraft engine, gas turbine and other high-technology products," GE said in a statement.
"Such work will include development of composites, machining, inspection, casting and coating technologies for GE's Aviation and Energy businesses."
GE said the plan calls for an investment of some 100 million dollars in a region hit hard by the depressed state of the US auto industry.
The center, which is expected to open later this year, will be located at the Visteon Village about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Detroit.
"To lead in manufacturing and create high-value jobs in the US, we must invest in technology and in people," GE chairman and chief executive Jeff Immelt said.
"The scientists, engineers and technologists that will work and learn at this center will help GE develop innovative new software, processes and technologies to make our manufacturing businesses even more productive and competitive."
GE, one of the largest US firms, makes transportation and energy equipment, controls the NBC Universal media group and has a big financial services arm.
