iPhone Software That Controls Robot Movements (w/ Video)

iPhone software specifically designed to control androids by using natural gestures on the touchscreen.

(PhysOrg.com) -- At the graduate school of media design at Keio University in Tokyo, a project called "Walky" is under developed. Researchers have developed specifically designed software for the iPhone that can control android movements by using natural gestures.

By using the on an or Ipod, an intuitive interface can control movements using more natural gestures. By using a walking motion with your index and middle finger will get the robot to walk. Tapping the screen will make the robot jump up and down while flicking a finger will make the robot kick.

Using natural gestures to control a robot's movements eliminates the need to learn controller commands that are associated with joysticks, paddles, and buttons. Using natural movements on a touchscreen makes it easier for anyone to pick up iPhone or iPod and start controlling a robot. Think of it as a universal remote control except there is no programming involved.

The research team at Keio University is also considering using the for controlling digital characters like on-screen avatars in video games; however for now the software is well-matched for bipedal robots.

The software will not be available for this Holiday Season but will debut in December at SIGGRAPH Asia in Yokohama.
