(AP) -- A marine biologist says he has discovered a new crab species off the coast of southern Taiwan that looks like a strawberry with small white bumps on its red shell.

National Taiwan Ocean University professor Ho Ping-ho says the crab resembles the species living in the areas around , Polynesia and Mauritius. But it has a distinctive clam-shaped shell about 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) wide, making it distinct.

Taiwanese crab specialist Wang Chia-hsiang confirmed Ho's finding.

Ho said Tuesday his team found two female of the new species last June off the coast of Kenting National Park, known for its rich marine life. The crabs died shortly thereafter, possibly because the water in the area was polluted by a cargo ship that ran aground.

Discovering new species is always interesting.

I think the most burning question on my mind is, what do these strawberry crabs taste like?

I hope that wasn't the only ones there or we just went and killed off another species.

Since they died shortly thereafter, does this mean they were already in a jam?

Thank you, very much. The surreal image and taste of strawberry and crab jam (on a scone, say) is going rise to the surface of my consciousness throughout the day. It has it's potential uses; perhaps I can evoke it's taste in correlation with less than desirable personalities I run across until I get home. Andre Breton would be most appreciative of your contribution to the imaginarium of the species:)

Just wondering how crab was defined as a new species? Genetics? External characteristics?
