Bangladeshi Muslim protesters shout slogans as they burn a Swedish flag during a protest against social networking website facebook for holding a competition on caricatures of Prophet Mohammed, in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Friday, May 28, 2010. (AP) -- Bangladesh has become the second South Asian nation after Pakistan to block the popular social networking website Facebook over a page that urged people to draw images of Islam's Prophet Muhammad.

Chief telecommunication regulator Zia Ahmed said Sunday that access to the site has been temporarily blocked because it was publishing caricatures that may hurt the religious sentiments of people in the Muslim-majority nation.

Ahmed said the government had asked local Internet service providers to block the objectionable content, and that access to Facebook would be restored if the offending material was removed.

Muslims regard depictions of the prophet, even favorable ones, as blasphemous.

Thousands of Muslims protested in Dhaka on Friday against what they called Facebook's "blasphemous content" because of a page called "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day" that encouraged users to post images of the prophet.

The ban disappointed some Facebook users, estimated by the ISP Association to number nearly 1 million in a country of 150 million people.

"The government should have stopped the objectionable page rather than blocking the entire site," Facebook user Farzan Hasan said.

Pakistan blocked on May 19 following a court order requiring the move. The court is to review the ban on Monday to determine whether access will be restored.

I think it's time to ban religions that deify human prophets, shamans, gurus, saints, evangelists, and all similar. As to god, I would be embarrassed to be a member of a religion with a god who needed his worshippers to protect him. If god exists (he doesnt), I'm sure he can take care of himself.

And I'm sure he could care less if people worshipped or praised him by ritualizing or genuflecting to please him. What a fop and a loser god would be if those things gave him pleasure and satisfaction! As are those people who actually think god would care about those things, or would believe in one that would.

Blaspheme a man? How do you blaspheme a man? Isn't this just another form of idol worship? What's the difference between deifying a holyman in words or in picture form? I think god, if he exists (he doesn't) would be highly offended by this concept, if he were capable of being offended. Why would you believe in a god who could be offended by anything humans could do or say?

I think it's foolish and naive to think that blocking Facebook solves the "problem". Was this domain the only one with "objectionable content"? And, yeah, pretty silly in the 21st century. I see Wikipedia has a lot of background info on this issue: http://en.wikiped...mmed_Day

Frajo, would you like to voice your objections to my comments above? Do you actually deny that religionism is the root of all evil? Just curious.

If you think "religion" is the root of all evil, you are one of the biggest fools alive.

IT is an absolute fact that the worst attrocities commited, EVER in the history of humanity were done by atheist governments, and not even against foreigners, but of all things, against their own citizens.

The sad thing is, many among the "forum mafia" here at Physorg have world views practically identical to these former governments.

Pride and Greed are the roots of all evil, and these are about as Godless among principles as can be found.

And that is an absolute religionist lie, fostered by gullible pinheads like yourself. Where should I start? Mongols, Romans, Nazis, Alexander, Charlemagne, Huns, any Chinese dynasty (incl. Nationalists)(hell, Taipei rebellion killed 200 MILLION, started by baptist missionaries), ottomans, conquistadors, joshuas hordes, crusaders, Iran/Iraq, NAZIs- all religionists. Numbers don't count- you've got to consider % of populations. Most would have killed far more if they had existed, because GOD said it was OKAY.

Take your Holy Garbage somewheres else.

The most vicious censors were the Soviets and other, secular tyrannies and China has been doing quite a job to censor web sites.
"the Chinese government’s complex system of censorship – an ever-shifting hodgepodge of restrictions on what information users can access, which Web tools they can use and what ideas they can post. "

Mark Zukerberg, is a Ashkenazi Jew, but that still doesn't justify the behaviour of these Muslims. I think we should round up all the Jews in Europe and all the Arabs in the Middle East and make them go away. Indo-European people such as the Persians,Kalash,Germans,Pamiri,Irish..etc. will break away from this religious and ethnic tyranny.
You too should kill yourself to the betterment of all.

Freedom of Expression!!! but for all on equal basis. one of my friend made a group on fcaebook about Hitler with a few sentences(i repeat a few sentences)in his favor. facebook immediately removed that page and send a mail saying,

"Hi Saad,
After reviewing your situation, we have determined that your violated our Statement of Rights and Responsibilities. One of Facebooks main priorities is the comfort and safety of our users.

We do not tolerate hate speech. Targeting people based on their race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, or disease is a serious violation of our standards and has resulted in the permanent loss of your account.

We will not be able to reactivate your account for any reason. This decision is final.

I didn't say "kill". I support freedom from tyranny, what you would consider mad,but I would consider ethnic allegiance or obligation.

How do you plan to 'make them go away' if you don't kill them or commit some tyrannical act?

Just a thought. If some content on Facebook offends you, don't go there. Facebook is not the only social networking site on the internet.

I think it's foolish and naive to think that disrespecting the sensitivities of millions of people who didn't offend you solves "the problem" of free speech. Is a drawing of Mohammed the only way to fight for the freedom of speech?
Why is there no facebook page which denies the holocaust? Why is there no facebook page which publishes some homeland security gag orders in order to further "free speech"?
Facebook and the proponents of this silly and naive move don't foster free speech at all, they just are showing their bias.

Religionism in general and religious aggression directed against others offends the sensitivities of millions of people. It also leads directly to the death and suffering of millions more. Will you stand with me in the fight to eradicate this evil insanity frajo?

Probably not. There are things that we as human beings have a right and a duty to practice intolerance of; and religionism is one of them. No religion is benign, all have the propensity to oppress those who do not believe in it, and as conflict is inevitable in this world so is religious intolerance and extremism directed at the forces of reason and order. No religion has the right to claim priority over others and yet all do. Therefore all must end, sooner or later, one way or another.

'Fill up the earth' with more of us and fewer of them, is religions common credo, the first mitzva. They want to preach their trash here then I and others will justifiably oppose it, as we have.

Some in the USA advocate the censorship 'hate speech' as well. "Groups want FCC to police hate speech on talk radio, cable news networks"

I prefer picking up a pencil and drawing Muhammad to picking up a gun and killing Muhammad's followers.

When Radical Islam went forward and executed some satirists who were commenting on the exclusionary principle that Islam uses when granting "free speech" within its countries. Radical Islam exported this censorship through violence, ie: Jihad against Rushdie, the murder of Van Gogh, the jailing of Wilkes, etc. As a defender of free speech, and a believer that the pen is indeed mightier than the sword, I support and participated in Draw Muhammad Day.

This is offensive to Islam, and I don't care.
Killing people for speaking their mind is offensive to me, and they didn't care. Who's wrong? Me for engaging my artistic side, or them for pullin

Don't you see the other side of the coin? How can you support "Free Speech" without supporting at the sime time the right to lie about and the right to degrade innocent people who don't have the means to counteract?

This is offensive to Islam, and I don't care.
No, Islam is not a person and can't be offended. You are offending a huge set of people of whom you know very few. Among this huge set of people there are millions of people who are minors, or don't have any negative attitude against you, or just want to live in peace. You are offending all of those innocent people and you don't care.
This way you are furthering hate and unrest. Because innocent people become enemies if they are offended by you.
Killing people for speaking their mind is offensive to me, and they didn't care. Who's wrong?
Generalization.
