German inventors more active in 2004

The number of inventions in Germany significantly increased last year, the German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported Monday.
The German patent bureau Patentamt registered 1,000 more patents in 2004 than a year before. German scientists and engineers in 2004 registered roughly 48,000 patents, the newspaper said.

The automobile branch had 6,000 patents, making it Germany's most innovative sector. It is followed by inventions in the machine and electrical engineering sectors.

German technology giant Siemens alone has registered roughly 3,900 patents, followed by Bosch with 2,300 patents, the newspaper said.

The German states have recently agreed on spending roughly $180 million a year more on research and development.
