Intel demos rugged PC for hostile climates
August 24, 2005Intel has unveiled a new personal computer built to withstand the rigors of desert climates and infrastructure gaps in the developing world.
The device unveiled at this week's Intel Developer Forum is designed to serve as a "community computer" that can perform a variety of functions in remote areas where climate and dicey infrastructure are daunting issues.
The PC can run off of a car battery if necessary and is heavily filtered to keep airborne dirt and even insects out of the electronics.
Satellites will be able to provide the Intel PC with WiMax service, particularly in the rural India market where landlines are scarce.
Intel's timetable for manufacture and deployment in India or elsewhere were not announced.
