Kansas town traffic control goes wireless

August 29, 2005

The Kansas City suburb of Lenexa, Kan., has selected Alvarion Limited to deploy a wireless telephone and broadband network linking city traffic operations.

Alvarion said late last week that the project will utilize the BreezeACCESS 900 system to provide communications to city buildings and vehicles and to remotely operate fixed video cameras and traffic lights.

The first 10 square miles of the project should be up and running at the end of the month. The remaining 30 square miles will be covered in Phase 2.

The funding for the project comes from Project GreenLight, a venture of 19 communities in the Kansas City area aimed at decreasing traffic congestion and air pollution by fine-tuning traffic flows in the area.
