Girl saved from drowning by computer

September 1, 2005

A British girl was saved from drowning by a computer after a warning system alerted security when she sank to the bottom of a swimming pool.

CNet reports the 10-year-old girl was swimming in a Bangor, North Wales, pool Aug. 24 when she was unable to surface.

A computer system that monitors pool activity sounded the alarm and a lifeguard on duty rescued her within 40 seconds.

She was taken to a nearby hospital and has recovered.

This was the first time in Britain that the computer lifeguard system was utilized.

The Poseidon system was installed in the pool in 2003 for $118,000 and uses a combination of above and below water cameras to monitor swimmers.
