Verizon, Dell offer laptop wireless plan
March 29, 2006Two new Dell laptops will allow users to sign up for 24-hour sessions on Verizon's wireless Internet system.
The embedded EV-DO (Evolution-Data Optimized) capability lets customers sign up for the $15 BroadbandAccess wireless sessions directly from their computer without a long-term commitment or a visit to a WiFi hot spot.
"There is no need for customers to interrupt their work to visit a store or call customer service; they click on the icon, follow the prompts and they're set up," Verizon's Claude Mitchell explained Wednesday. "This is especially convenient for the traveler who may be in New York in the morning and Washington in the evening. They can log on as much as they need to within that same 24-hour period."
Mitchell said the service is a convenience for customers and a sampling of BroadbandAccess, which costs $60 per month.
The EV-DO embed is found in the Dell Latitude D620 and D820 and will seamlessly switch to Verizon's 1xRTT NationalAccess network if the user leaves BroadbandAccess service territory.
